2-Thiobarbituric acid is used to determine the extent of spoilage of edible and inedible oils.
This effectively estimates the efficacy of the antioxidant used. The procedure depends upon the
measurement of malonaldehyde which is produced during the oxidative degradation of the oils.
The malonaldehyde is condensed with 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) to obtain a pink chromogen which
is measured spectrophotometrically at 530 mΜ.
In Electroplating: 2-Thiobarbituric acid finds use in preparation of compounds
which improve copper plating qualities.
